fifth in the Women's Collegiate Championship

Hannah Bews from Dorset and Emma Taylor from Saunton, both coming up to the end of their fourth and final year at Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach in Florida, finished joint third and joint fifth respectively in the Women's Collegiate Championship over one round at Marietta, Georgia.
Over a par-71, 5807yd course, two players tied for the individual honours - Honesty Biggers (South Carolina State) and Nicole West (Hampton) with a pair of 76s.
Hannah Bews had a 79 and Emma an 80. A total of 45 players took part.
Hampton University (319) pipped Bethune Cookman (322) for the team title in a field of nine squads.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hertfordshire’s Hannah Burke scooped a host of honours when she was runner-up in the Big 12 Conference women’s championship on the US college circuit.
Hannah, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, is a senior student at Baylor University, Texas and this was her 13th career top-five finish – a new college record. The 22-year-old from Mid Herts has had five top-fives this season alone.
She also shares the college record for 21 top-10 finishes – and for that achievement she was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team. She’s the first player from Baylor to win this recognition three times.
In the championship, at the Jimmie Austin OU club in Oklahoma, Hannah finished eight shots behind Oklahoma State’s Swedish player Caroline Hedwall. After a four-over 76 in the first opening round, Hannah shot two-under over the final 36 holes with back-to-back 71s.
Baylor head coach Sylvia Ferndon said: “I couldn’t be prouder of Hannah finishing second; she deserves it. She’s been a great leader.”

Linzi Allan named in the All-Heartland Conference Teams

Scot Linzi Allan is one of three Newman University, Wichita students named to the All-Heartland Conference teams. Linzi earned first team honours, while Alyssa Balding from Northumberland and Andrea Martires were named to the women's second team.
Allan was the only Jet to receive first team All-Heartland Conference honours. The freshman from Ayrshire had three top-10 finishes this season, including first place at the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Stampede. She ended the season with a sixth place finish at the Heartland Conference Tournament with rounds of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3), to finish seven over par.
Balding, a freshman from Northumberland, England, earned second team All-Heartland Conference honours’. After an up and down season, Balding finished strongly with a top-20 finish at the Heartland Conference Tournament. Her most impressive showing of the season was a sixth place finish at the Texas A&M-Commerce Spring Classic.

Ellie Givens, the 2007 English girls champion from Darlington, played her part in a takeover by the University of Denver of the leading positions in the Sun Belt Conference women's tournament at The Shoals, Alabama last week (April 19 to 21).
Ellie, pictured, a junior (third-year) student, achieved her highest finish of the season in coming second to freshman team-mate Kimberly Kim who has been chosen to play for the United States in the Curtis Cup match against Great Britain & Ireland at Essex County Club, Massachusetts from June 11-13.
Kimberley, scoring her first win on the US women's college circuit, had rounds of 69, 75 and 71 for a one-under-par total of 215 over the par-72, 6123yd course.
She finished only a shot ahead of Ellie Givens who had rounds of 70, 74 and 72.
A third Denver player, Kelly Drack, finished third on 217 and their monopoly of the top-10 placings continued with Stephanie Sherlock finished fifth on 219 and Sarah Faller from Galway coming seven on 221 with scores of 71, 74 and 76.
This is the tournament - as we reported a day or two ago - in which Wales' Anna Carling (Arkansas State) tied for 13th place on 226 with scores of 78, 76 and 72.
Another British student, Clara Leathers (Middle Tennessee State) finished joint 27th in a field of 55 players with scores of 80, 75 and 76. Clara, a final year student, hails from Aylesbury.
Not surprising that Denver won the Sun Belt Conference title by a staggering 34 shots from Middle Tennessee State with Arkansas-Little Rock third in a field of 11 teams.
After the tournament, Ellie Givens, Sarah Faller and Anna Carling were among the players named to the Sun Belt Conference team.
It's not a team in the European sense of the word in that American post-tournament teams never play any matches. It is a selection of the players who are considered the best in the conference.
Ellie the highest-placed English student next to Jodi Ewart (University of New Mexico) in Golfweek's current American college women's rankings.
Jodi is seventh, Sally Watson 42nd, Ellie Givens 70th and Hannah Burke 94th. They are the only British students in the US women's college circuit top 100.
What a boost it would have been for the GB&I Curtis Cup team to have had Jodi Ewart in its line-up, but the Yorkshire girl is turning professional as soon as she is finished with university and before the Curtis Cup so that she can play on the Futures Tour right away.

Anna Carling joint 13th in Alabama and named to

All-Sun Belt Conference team

Anna Carling from Wales tied for 13th place in the Sun Belt Conference Championships at Muscle Shoals, Alabama and was honoured as an All-Sun Belt Conference selection. The freshman standout matched her best single-round score of the season with a 72 for the final 18 holes and finished with a combined 226.
After finishing the first day tied for 32nd place, Carling improved her score each of the next two rounds to move up 19 places in the final standings.
Carling has top twenty finishes in nine of the ten tournaments she played with five top tens including her first tournament win in Kentucky . She finished the season as Arkansas State University’s number one player with a stroke average this semester of 75.11.
The Conference Championship individual medallist was Kimberley Kim recently named as a member of the USA Curtis Cup team and Sun Belt Conference freshman of the year,

Crieff Golf Club member Roseanne Niven, coming to the end of her four years at the University of California-Berkeley, slipped out of the top 20 with a final round of 79 in the Women's Pac-10 golf championship at Eugene Country Club, Oregon.
Roseanne, pictured right, from Tibbermore, near Perth, had earlier rounds of 74 and 73, which included seven birdies, but she could not get a single birdie in her final round which was marred by a double bogey 6 at the first hole.
As it was the former British women's open amateur stroke-play champion finished a creditable joint 21st on 226 in a quality field of 50 players, 13 places and 10 strokes ahead of fellow Scot Sally Watson, the Curtis Cup player and candidate for a place in the 2010 team.
Stanford University student Sally opened satisfactorily with a 73 but then had nightmare rounds of 81 and 82, her final round including a score of 47 for holes 10 to 18, two triple bogey 7s and a double bogey 6 for a total of 236 and a share of 34th place.
Former British open amateur champion Carlota Ciganda from Spain tied with Arizona State University team-mate Juliana Murcia for victory on 214, Carlota shooting 71-72-71 to Julian's 68-77-69.
Although Arizona State also had a player who was one of four in joint third place on 219, they were robbed of the team title by a virus which laid low two of their players, Giulia Molinaro and Jennifer Johnson. They were confined to bed after the first round in which Giulia had a 74 and Jennifer a 72. Without the necessary scores from five players in each round, Arizona State technically had a "No Return" in the team event in which they were defending the championship.
Rivals Arizona (878) won the title ahead of UCLA (881) with Oregon (889). California (909) finished sixth of the 10 competiting teams.

KATIE MUNDY JT FOURTH IN CALIFORNIA

Katie Mundy (Western Texas), a member of Hampshire's Dunwood Manor club, finished joint fourth in a field of 34 players at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational women's college tournament at Fountain Grove Golf Club, Santa Rosa in California this week.
Over a par-72 course of 5,825yd, Katie had scores of 78 and 76 for 154 - only four shots behind the winner Dayna Bersamin (Hawaii-Hilo University) whose rounds of 76 and 74 for 150 gave her a three-stroke winning margin.
Katie's team-mate, Hollie Weatherburn from Cumbria) finished seventh on 159 with scores of 79 and 80.
Sonoma State (637) won the team title ahead of Western Texas (652) in a field of six squads.

Abbey and Nicole (jt 4th) help Nova SE win Sunshine State team title

Nova Southeastern University, Florida's two English students, Abbey Gittings from Tamworth and Nicole Whitmore from Milton Keynes, shared fourth place in the Women's Sunshine State Conference Championship at Grand Oaks Golf Club, Davie in Florida this week.
Abbey had rounds of 73, 76 and 75 for 224 while Nicole had the same total with scores of 77, 73 and 74.
In a field of 40 players, they finished six strokes behind the winner and team-mate, Sandra Changkija who won by four shots with very good scores of 72, 77 and 69 for a total of 218 over a par-71 course of 6,073yd.
Nicole and Abbey's performance helped Nova Southeastern win the conference team title by 21 shots from Florida Southern (903) with Rollins (916) a distant third in a field of eight teams.

Natasha Podmore just outside top 10 in California

Natasha Podmore (San Francisco), a senior-year student from Warrington and a member at Delamere Forest GC, tied for 11th place in a field of 25 at the West Coast Conference Championship at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club, Vallejo in California.
Natasha had round s of 88, 77 and 78 for 243.
Individual winner was Lisa McCloskey (Pepperdie) with scores of 77, 74 and 74 for a total of 225 which gave her a two-shot victory over a par-72 course of 5,949yd.
Pepperdine (906) won the team title ahead of San Francisco (938) in a field of five teams.

Stacey's top 20 finish in Indiana
Stacey Rodgers from West Hove, a senior student at Missouri State University, finished joint 15th in a field of 540 at the State Farm MVC Championship at Rolling Hills Country Club, Newburgh in Indiana.
Stacey had scores of 80, 81 and 75 for 236 - 17 shots behind the winner, Olivia Lansing (Drake) who won by three strokes with rounds of 72, 75 and 72 for 219.

Linzi Allan finishes joint sixth in Oklahoma

Ayrshire's Linzi Allan, a student at Newman University, Wichita, was back in action this week and did very well indeed to tie for sixth place in a field of 44 players for the Heartland Conference Tournament at Rose Creek Golf Club, Edmond in Oklahoma.
Over a par-72 course of 6,150yd, Linzi had rounds of 76 and 75 for 151 - five shots behind the winner, Emily Kvinta (St Edwards University) who scored 72 and 74.
Linzi's team-mate Alyssa Balding from Northumberland shared 18th place on 160 with scores of 81 and 79.
Newman (624) finished third behind St Edwards University (592) and Incarnate Word University (620) in a field of nine teams.
+Linzi's dad tells Kirkwoodgolf that Linzi will not be back in Scotland in time to play in the Scottish women's championship at Craigielaw next month.

Abbey College win Carolinas titles

The Belmont Abbey men's and women's golf teams were crowned the 2010 Conference Carolinas champions and Abbey freshman Melissa Siviter (from the West Midlands) and senior Joe Campbell (from Cheltenham) claimed medallist honours after three days of competition at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, North Carolina.
In the women's tournament, the Abbey, which is ranked fifth in the nation, led wire-to-wire as four of the five Crusader players finished in the top four. Belmont Abbey led by 26 shots after the first day, 41 on the second and won by a margin of 55 shots over Pfeiffer and Queens, which finished in a tie for second with scores of 987.
Melissa Siviter, pictured, a Staffordshire county team player and the Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year, won by three shots from team-mate Liz Cortez and six over third-placed Carley Warrington from Bradwell.
Siviter bookended rounds of 76 between a second round 78. Cortez entered the final round leading Siviter by one stroke, but her final round of 80 left her in second place.
The men's tournament turned into a two-team race, as the Abbey entered the final round leading Barton by seven strokes. The Bulldogs rallied to take a two-shot lead with the final group still on the course, but Campbell's even par 70 proved to be the difference as the Abbey won by a razor-thin margin of three shots.
Senior year student Campbell won the individual title by nine strokes as he carded rounds of 73-68-70. Barton posted a final round 297 to the Abbey's 301, but the second round edge was just enough as the Crusaders held on with a final score of 885 to Barton's 888.

Ayrshire student confirms No 3 WAGR behind Byrne, Kellett

Michael Stewart scores second win on US college circuit

Troon's Michael Stewart, winner of the Scottish boys' match-play championship in 2008, has scored his second win on the United States men's college golf circuit.
The 20-year-old second-year student, pictured right, at East Tennessee State University, Jefferson City, birdied the last hole, getting down in two shots from 111yd, to win the Coca Cola Wofford Invitational at CC of Spartanburg in South Carolina.
Stewart's scores were 72, 66 and 71 for a seven-under-par total of 209. The 66 was, by three strokes, his best of the 2009-2010 college season.
Runners-up on 210 were Irish team-mate Seamus Power from Waterford with 68-71-71 for 210 and Jacobo Pastor (Charleston Southern) who hit the same mark with rounds of 72, 70 and 68.
“I told our assistant coach (Keith Nolan) on the 18th hole that I wanted to know what I had to do to win outright,” Stewart said. “He showed me three fingers, indicating I needed a birdie 3. I had 111 yards to go after my drive and I hit a 54-degree wedge to four feet, and made the putt. It’s a big confidence booster to be playing well like this."
Other East Tennessee State students in the top 25 were Paul O'Kane from Castledawson, Northern Ireland in joint sixth place with scores of 73, 69 and 71 for 213; Garth McGee from Banor in a share of 18th place on 218 (72-71-75) and Rhys Enoch from Cornwall on 220 (jt 24th) with rounds of 75, 73 and 72.
East Tennesssee State (847) won the team title ahead of USC Upstate (862) and Wofford College (863) in a field of 13 teams.
Stewart's indiviual win over a good-class field of 70 players confirmed his position as the No 3 Scot in the latest update of the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Banchory's James Byrne, a student at Arizona State Univesity, is the top Scot in 31st position overall, down one place from last week.
Ross Kellett (Colville Park) has gone up one place to No 49 while Stewart's victory earned him a rise of 21 places to No 167.

Manchester's Alex Hogben wins at Iowa City

Manchester's Alex Hogben, coming up to the end of his four years at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, scored his second win on the US college circuit - his first since he was a freshman - in the Hawkeye-TaylorMade/Adidas Invitational college tournament at Finkbine Golf club, Iowa City.
Over a long par-72 course of 7,223yd, Hogben, pictured, spreadeagled the field of 60 players with a brilliant last round of eight-under-par 64 which included five birdies in his first eight holes and three birides in his last four. His round equalled the lowest ever score returned in the history of the UKMC golf programme.
Alex's earlier rounds were 73 and 72. So he finished with a seven-under-par total of 209 and won by six strokes.

Top-10 finish for Tom Berry in Texas

In the Aggie Invitational at the Traditions Golf Club, Bryan in Texas, San Diego's two students from Surrey, freshman Tom Berry and sophomore Andrew Cooley finished tied eighth and 50th respectively.
Berry scored 70, 68 and 74 for 212, four under par for the 7,146yd, par-72 course.
Cooley started badly with an 80 but shot 72 and 71 in his later rounds for a total of 223.
Winner with a 1o-under-par total of 206 was Jordan Russell (Texas A&M). Playing over his home course, he had scores of 70, 69 and 67 to win by a shot from team-mate Geoff Shaw in a tournament dominated by Texas A&M players.
Texas A&M won the team title by 21 shots from Oklahoma State with texas Tech (1067) third and San Diego Staate (1087) fourth of 12.

CONFERENCE GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Dalgety Bay's Scott Crighton, coming up to the end of four successful golfing and educational years at Western New Mexico University, achieved one of his many top-10 finishes on the US college golf circuit, thanks to a final round of 69 in the Hanny Stanislau Invitational men's tournament at Turlock Golf & Country Club in California.
Scott had rounds of 74, 75 and 69 for a two-over-par total of 218 over the par-72, 6,641yd course. His final round was the fifth lowest of a tournament contested by 88 players.
On the strength of his finish, Crighton was named Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference Golfer of the Week for the third time this year.
The winner of the event, Gene Webster (CSU San Bernardino) had a spectacular course-record 63 after earlier rounds of 68 and 67 for a brilliant total of 18-under-par 198, 10 shots below the previous tournament record. No surprise that Webster won by 12 strokes, Crighton finishing only eight shots behind the runner-up.
Crighton, a former pupil at Inverkeithing High School, finished runner-up in the 2009 Scottish youths championship during his summer holidays from Western New Mexico University whose head golf coach Kent Beaty had this to say:
"Scott has shown remarkable improvement in his three years at WNMU. He is a fierce competitor, has a model short game, and his ball striking gives him many opportunities to make birdies. He's one of the best players in the region, and he will only get better ... Throw that in with the fact that he is a 4.0 student, and you have the total package. We will be sorry to see him go back to Scotland for good."

Ellie Robinson from Middlesbrough, who made the last 32 at Harlech in last June's British women's open amateur championship, is now a first-year student at Georgia State University - and she is doing well in her freshman year.
The 20-year-old's latest top-10 finish was in the CAA Women's College Championship at Hot Springs, Virginia over a par-72 course of just over 6,000 yards.
It was a testing course and the weather was apparently a factor as well . Ellie had rounds of 79, 81 and 76 for a total of 236 and a share of ninth place.
At the same tournament, two Irish students who are students at Old Dominion University, Norfolk in Virginia, junior Emma Gilmore and senior Laura Holmes, had totals of 250 and 259 respectively.
Emma, from Moylough, had scores of 82, 86 and 82 to finish joint 28th while Laura from Ballina, Co May scored 83, 88 and 88 for a share of 41st place.
Even the winner in a field of 50 was over par for the 54 holes -- Charlotte Lorentzen, a Georgia State team-mate of Ellie Robinson, scoring 75, 73 and 69 for one-over 217. That final round was a brilliant effort, all things considered. No wonder Charlotte won by 10 strokes from Nicole Sakamoto (James Madison University) who had rounds of 74, 76 and 77 for 227.
Ellie had more than just her share of ninth place to celebrate for she played her part in Georgia State University winning the team event with a total of 923 - nine shots ahead of James Madison University.

Harriet Owers-Bradley joint 15th at Spook Rock, New York
Harriet Owers-Bradley from Nottingham, a junior-year student at Yale Universtiy, finished joint 15th in a field of 75 for the quaintly-named Roaree Invitational women's college tournament at Spook Rock Golf Club, Mamaroneck in New York State.
Harrier had scores of 77 and 78 for 155 - seven shots behind the joint winners, Mia Kabasakalis (Harvard) (72-76) and Nancy Shon (Columbia) (71-77), on 148.
Harvard (603) won the team title in a field of 12 squads by 10 shots from Pennsylviania with Yale (619) third.

Linzi Allan just outside top 20 in Texas

Ayrshire girl Linzi Allan, a freshman student at Newman University, Wichita, Kansas, finished joint 21st in a field of 93 players at the Tarleton State Coca-Cola Classic tournament at the par-72 6,216yd championship course at Harbor Lakes in Granbury, Texas.
Linzi, pictured, had rounds of 77 - 79 for a total of 156, She finished nine shots behind the winner, Carla Cooper from Tarleton State, with rounds of 73-74 for 147.
Linzi will be in action this week for Newman University in the Heartland Conference Championship’s which takes place at Rose Creek GC, Edmond in Oklahoma.

Also competing at Harbor Lakes were England's Alyssa Balding and Megan Birdsey, team-mates of Linsi Allan at Newman University.

Alyssa, from Northumberland, had scores of 84 and 83 for a shared of 68th place on 167 while Megan, from Bedfordshire, had rounds of 87 and 85 for 172 and a share of 83rd place in the big field.

Jodi Ewart wins Mountain West Conference title for 3rd time

The University of New Mexico women's team went wire-to-wire to win its third straight Mountain West Conference Championship today - and Yorkshire's Jodi Ewart, ranked No 6 in Golfweek's US women's college standings, won the individual title by four strokes.

It was the third time Jodi had taken the title. She previously was Mountain West Conference champion in 2007 and again in 2008.

Over the three rounds at what is recognised as a tough track, Ewart had one eagle, eight birdies, two double bogeys and seven bogeys to finish at one-over-par 217.
The Lobos, No. 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished at 34-over 898 and defeated No. 25 Texas Christian University by nine strokes at Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California
Jodi Ewart, sixth in Golfweek’s rankings, shot a final-round 71 to win the individual title by four strokes. It was the fifth win of her US college golf circuit career, and the first since the 2009 Arizona Wildcat Invitational.

Northallerton (near York)-born Ewart, who had her 22nd birthday on January 7, finished at 1-over 217, four shots ahead of TCU’s Rachel Raastad. New Mexico’s Rebecca Hellbom was another shot back at 222, and Wyoming’s Jonelle Martinez and BYU’s Maggie Yuan tied for fourth at 227.

What a pity for Great Britain & Ireland's Curtis Cup hopes of beating the Americans at Essex County Club in June that Jodi is turning professional at the end of her four years at the University of New Mexico - BEFORE the Curtis Cup contest.

She would have been an automatic selection by the GB&I selectors had she remained an amateur until late June and would have given the Americans a run for their money. But Jodi is determined to pursue a tour pro golf career as soon as possible, cutting her teeth on the US Duramed Futures Tour.
New Mexico had posted just one top-5 finish this spring, a fourth-place showing last week at the ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. But the Lobos showed good form all week in California, leading each of the three rounds to win their third consecutive Mountain West title and seventh in the past 11 seasons. Colorado State finished third at 54-over 914, and UNLV came in at 928.

US COLLEGE CIRCUIT NEWS

Adam Galbraith wins for second time this year

Adam Galbraith, an English student at Webber International University, Florida, has won on the US college circuit for the second time this year.
Adam, from the Haywards Heath club, Sussex, followed up his February triumph by winning the quaintly-named Bash at the Beach college tournament, hosted by Embry-Riddle University, at Daytona Beach Country Club, Florida.
Galbraith had rounds of 68 and 67 for a nine-under-par total of 135 over the 6,338yd course.
He won by one shot from Carl McCauley (Florida Athlantic) who had a pair of 68s for 136.
Galbraith's team-mates and compatriots Craig Isabel, from Stanford-le-Hope, Tom Gamble, from Walton on Thames, and Connor O'Dell, a freshman from Taunton, Somerset, finished joint ninth, joint 15th and joint 44th respectively.
Isbal had rounds of 73 and 67 for 141, Gamble 72 and 71 for 143 and O'Dell 76 and 81 for 157.
Scott Carmichael, a member of Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh and a student at Johnson & Wales University-Floridaq, finishe djoint 35th in a field of 50 players with scores of 75 and 77 for 152.
Galbraith's fine effort spearheaded Webber International to victory in the team event. They finished five shots ahead of Florida Atlantic in a field of six squads.

Hannah Burke from Hertfordshire, a senior-year student at Baylor University, Texas, finished fourth in a field of 89 players at the Baylor Spring Invitational women's college tournament at Twin Rivers Golf Club, Waco in Texas.
Over a long women's course (6,367yd) with a par of 72, Hannah, picture by courtesy of English Women's Golf Association, had rounds of 78, 73 and 73 for a total of 224 - four shots behind the winner, Baylor team-mate Jaclyn Jansen with rounds of 71, 74 and 75.
Baylor completed a double whammy by winning the team title with a total of 904, 11 shots ahead of Oklahoma with Texas Tech (924) third of 16 teams.

Melissa, pictured, had rounds of 76 and 73 over the par-72, 5805yd course for a total of 149.

Team-mate Carley Warrington, a final-year student from Bradwell, England, tied for 12th place on 152 with scores of 77 and 75.

Susan Martin (Methodist University) was the individual winner with scores of 71 and 69 for 140, finishing one shot ahead of Ashley Denton (Wingate) (71-70).

Methodist University (604) pipped Belmont Abbey College (605) for the team title, contested by 15 squads. Carson-Newman College (611) finished third.

Olivia Jordan-Higgins' record-setting win

in Big South Women's Championship

Channel Islander Olivia Jordan-Higgins, a senior-year student at Charleston Southern University, won the Big South Women's Championship today at The Patriot Golf Club, South Carolina.
Olivia shot rounds of 70, 75 and 70 to title the title with a championship low aggregate of one-under-par 215. It was third time lucky for her - she finished second in 2008 and again in 2009.
Olivia, pictured above, also spearheaded a winning team effort by Charleston Southern whose aggregate of 881 was a conference championship record.
“I could not be prouder of our team and what they have accomplished,” Charleston Southern coach Kory Thompson said. “To play their best round of the tournament with the pressure on and the conditions at their toughest says a lot about the character of this team.”
With the victory, Charleston Southern clinches a berth in NCAA regional play, which begins May 6.
Hannah Coles (Radford University) from Birmingham finished 21st in a field of 45 players with scores of 75, 79 and 81 for 235.

Sinead O'Sullivan finishes joint 13th behind team-mate

Sinead O'Sullivan (East Tennessee State) from Ireland finished joint 13th in the Atlantic Sun Women's Championship at Venetian Bay Golf Club, New Smyrna, Florida.
Sinead scored 80, 70 and 75 for 225.
Team-mate Laura Jansone was the individual winner with scores of 69, 73 and 71 for 213. She finished two shots ahead of Stetson University's Alex Bluelow who had rounds of 72, 72 and 71.

Stetson (884) won the team title ahead of Kennesaw State (888) with East Tennessee State and Campbell University tieing for third place on 889 in a field of 10 teams.

Anna Carling scores first college win in America

Anna Carling from Cardiff, coming up to the end of her first year as a student at Arkansas State University, has scored her first tournament win on the US women's college circuit.

The Vale of Glamorgan player had rounds of 74, 72 and 76 for a total of 222 over a par-72, 5,817yd course to win the individual title in the Lady Colonel Classic at Kentucky on Monday by one shot.

It was her fifth top 10 finish in her last six competitions.

Andrea Downer (Murray State University) from Surrey finished joint seventh on 227 with scores of 76, 76 and 75.

Arkansas State (913) finished third in the team event behind Morehead State (905) and Memphis (907). Murray State (924) came fifth in a field of 17 teams.

Carling claimed the first tournament championship of her young career and became the third Carling, who entered the final round tied for first place, turned in her highest score of the tournament, a 76, but still finished with a combined 222 to top Morehead State's Marisa Kamelgarn by one stroke.

Carling shot an opening-round 74 and carded a 72, her lowest score of the season, during the second round that ended Saturday's play.
"I'm extremely proud of Anna," said ASU?head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "She has been close for several events now, and it's good to see her seal the deal."

Jodi Ewart, Sally Watson finish in top

10 in strongest US college field

Yorkshire's Jodi Ewart (University of New Mexico) and Scotland's Sally Watson (Stanford University, California) finished joint sixth and eighth respectively in the strongest United States women's college circuit field to assemble at the same venue this year.

The occasion was the Ping/ASU Invitational over the Karsten golf course at Tempe, Arizona.

Jodi Ewart, who is coming to the end of her four years at New Mexico and has told the GB&I Curtis Cup selectors that she will be turning professional BEFORE the match against the United States in June, shot rounds of 72, 72 and 67 for a five-under-par total of 211 over the 6,230yd, par-72 course.

Sally also had three very good rounds in very good company and over a testing course. Sally and Jodi were Curtis Cup team-mates in the 2008 match over the Old Course, St Andrews.

Miss Watson, who hails from South Queensferry, had rounds of 71, 72 and 69 for a four-under tally of 212.

A double bogey 6 at the ninth in her second round probably cost the Scot sixth place on her own. In all, the long-hitting Watson had 12 birdies over the 54-hole contest, five of them in her final round - at the long fifth, par-4 eighth, long 10th, short 12th and long 14th. She bogeyed the short seventh and par-4 18th.

Ellie Givens (Denver), from Darlington, tied for 42nd place with scores of 73, 73 and 77 for 223.

Former British women's open amateur stroke-play champion Roseanne Niven (California) from Crieff shared 51st place with scores of 74, 76 and 75 for 225.

The individual winner was Stephanie Kono (University of California-Las Vegas) with scores of 71, 70 and 66 for a nine-under total of 209 - one shot ahead of Jennifer Song (Southern California), one of the US Curtis Cup team selections for this year's match, according to Golfweek.

UCLA (856) won the team title ahead of home-course team Arizona State (856) with Southern California (858) third, New Mexico (863) fourth, Purdue (865) fifth and Denver (865) sixth. Stanford finished 10th in the 17-team field.

Senior Jodi Ewart and sophomore Rebecca Hellbom (from Sweden) each shot 5-under 67 to propel 24th-ranked New Mexico to one of the best rounds in school history in the final round of the PING/ASU Invitational.
The Lobos shot a 10-under 278, the second-lowest total and the second-best score in relation to par ever by a New Mexico team. UNM's 278 was the lowest round by any team in a tournament that featured 12 of the nation's top-29 schools.
Ewart and Hellbom tied a UNM record by playing a round in 5-under. It had been accomplished five previous times by three UNM golfers, including Ewart at the 2009 Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire. The 67 was a career-best for both golfers and one stroke shy of the Lobo mark set by Kailin Downs at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships.

Hellbom ended in a tie for third with a 7-under 209 (71-71-67) - her best 54-hole total at UNM and just one shot off the school mark set by Ewart at the 2009 McGuire.
"It was just really solid," said Hellbom of the lowest round of her playing career. "The hit the fairways and made a lot of putts."

Ewart, who had matched the par of 72 in both her first rounds, caught fire in the third and final round with four straight birdies between holes 3 and 6. She made a bogey at 8 before adding birdies at 10 and 13 in halves of 32 and 35.
"I got off to a great start. The four straight birdies got me going," said Ewart, who went into the tournament ranked as the No. 6 ranked US women's collegiate. "My approach shots were really good. This gives us a lot of confidence going into the conference championships."

Peter Latimer wins in North Carolina

Peter Latimer  from St Andrews, Scotland, a student at Guilford College, Greensboro, North Carolina, shot one-under-par 71 to win his school-record fifth medalist title. He won the 39th Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate at Camp Lejeune, N.C., with a three-day score of 207, two strokes in front of Loren Bunting of the Savannah College of Art & Design. Latimer helped Guilford to sixth place among 32 teams with a three-day 874. Click here for the team and individual leader boards.

San Diego State to team victory


English students Andrew Cooley and Tom Berry helped San Diego State University win the team championship in the Barona Collegiate Cup tournament at Barona Creek Golf Club, Lakeside in California on Thursday and Friday.

Berry, a freshman, also from Surrey, had scores of 76, 74 and 73 for 223 and a share of 36th place in the field of 104 players.
John Chin (UC-Irvine) was the individual title winner with scores of 65, 71 and 68 for 12-under-par 204 - some shooting! Chin won by three strokes.
San Diego State (1072) won the team event from UC-Irvine (1094) and Orewgon (1097) in a field of 16 teams.

Englishman Peter Tarver Jones from Worthing, Sussex and a junior (third year) student at Belmont Abbey College, Charlotte in North Carolina, won the Bobcat Invitational college tournament at Lake Oconee Golf Club, Cuscowilla, Eatonon, Georgia earlier this week.
Jones, pictured holding the winner's trophy, had rounds of 71, 68 and 75 for a total of 214 over the par-70, 6730yd course.
He headed a field of 89 players by three shots from Victor Billskoog (Barry University) (72-73-72) with another Belmont Abbey student, Joe Campbell, a senior from Cheltenham, joint third on 218 (74-70-74).
Liam Ashby, a sophomore from Dublin and a student at Carson-Newman University, Tennessee, shared 19th place on 223 with scores of 75, 75 and 73.
Adam Hedges from Bromley, a freshman student at Belmont Abbey, tied for 39th place on 226 with scores of 82, 71 and 73.
Glasgow's Stephen Keane, a senior student at Belmont Abbey, finished joint 50th with scores of 81, 71 and 77 for 229.
Gavin Hay (Carson-Newman University), from Glasgow, tied for 75th place on 236 with scores of 79, 80 and 77.
Lynn University, Florida won the team title with a total of 881, just one shot ahead of Belmont Abbey. Carson-Newman finished last of 17.

David McGregor third in California

Helensburgh's David McGregor, son of former world-class swimmer Bobby McGregor and a sophomore student at Post University, Connecticut, finished third in a field of 59 players at the SoCal Intercollegiate Chmpionship at Mission Viejo Country Club, California.

David, pictured right, had rounds of 74, 78 and 72 for a total of 224 over the par-71, 7143yd course. He finished four shots behind the winner, Collin Mayer (St Edwards University) (71-73-76), and two behind runner-up Ryan Indonina (CSS- Dominguez Hills) (71-74-77).

McGregor had three other Post University students behind him. Lee Wanklyn, a senior student from Berkshire, scored 79, 81 81 for 241 and a share of 24th place alongside Thomas Rees, a freshman from Wales (81-81-79), and Gavin Wilson, a sophomore from Ladybank, came 45th on 253 with scores of 90, 84 and 79.

Post University finished seventh of 11 in the team event with a total of 954. Sonoma State, the winners, totalled 919.

TOP TEN FINISH FOR SCOT LINZI IN US

Linzi, pictured, had two rounds of 80 for a total of 160 over the par-72, 6077yd course. She finished six shots behind the winner by three strokes, Erica Bensch (Central Oklahoma Univesity) (76-78).
Linzi's team-mates, Megan Birdsey from Bedfordshire and Alyssa Balding from Northumberland, finished joint 16th and joint 36th respectively.

Megan scored 81 and 84 for 165, Alyssa 85 and 86 for 171.

Newman University finished fourth of 10 in the team event behind winners West Texas A&M.

Anna Carling joint seventh in Panther Intercollegiate

Welsh student Anna Carling, a freshman at Arkansas State University, also tied for seventh place in her competitive outing this past week. The Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club member had rounds of 76, 75 and 77 for a total of 228 over a par-72, 6047yd course at Eagles Landing Country Club, Stockbridge in Georgia.

The John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate had an entry of 72 players and was won with three strokes to spare by Cathrine Madsen (Georgia State) with scores of 76, 70 and 75 for five-over-par 221.

Ellie Robinson, a freshman student from Middlesbrough at Georgia State, shared 20th place with a total of 233, made up of 74, 79 and 80.

Andrea Downer, a senior student from Surrey at Murray State University, Kentucky, tied for 27th place on 238 with scores of 80, 82 and 76.

Former Welsh champion Kirsty O'Connor (Ball State) finished joint 57th on 250 with scores of 84, 82 and 84.

On the same mark was Florida International University freshman Nikki Dunn from Harrogate, Yorkshire with scores of 83, 85 and 82.

Georgia State (905) won the team title. Ball State (996) were sixth and Murray State (953) tied for 10th place. Arkansas State (973) finished last of 13.

Another high finish by Sinead O'Sullivan

Last week Ireland's Sinead O'Sullivan finished joint third in a college event in Arizona. This week the girl from Galway, a senior year student at East Tennessee State University, based at Jefferson City, moved on to Pinehurst, North Carolina and finished joint fourth in a field of 93 players at the Pinehurst Challenge women's college tournament.

Sinead had scores of 72, 72 and 74 for a two-over-par total of 218 over the Pinehurst No 6 course (there are eight of them!) which has a ladies par of 72 and measures 5992yd.

She finished six shots behind the winner, Florida State's Lacey Agney (72-70-70) who had two shots to spare over runner-up Christine Shimel (Maryland) (71-68-75).

Channel Islander Olivia Higgins (Charleston Southern) had a unfortunate and costly last round of 79. After two scores of 71, Olivia was lying second behind Christine Shimel but she eventually finished joint seventh on 222.

Florida State (863) won the team title from Maryland (896) with Campbell (897) third and East Tennesee State (903) fourth. Charleston State came joint 15th of the 18 competing teams.

Laura Cutler shares fourth place in North Carolina

Laura Cutler, a junior student from Essex at Jacksonville State University, Alabama, shared fourth place behind runaway winner Carmen Perez-Narbon (North Carolina-Wilmington) in the Lady Seahawk Classic women's college tournament at River Landing Country Club, Wallace in North Carolina.

Laura had scores of 73, 78 and 76 for 227 over the par-72, 6012yd course.

Perez-Narbon was in a class of her own with rounds of 69, 73 and 73 for one-under-par 215. She won by nine strokes in a field of 52 players. So Laura Cutler finished only three shots behind the runner-up.

North Carolina-Wilmington (915) won the team title ahead of Pennsylvania (928) with Jacksonville State (931) third in a field of nine squads.

Crichton wins New Mexico college event by five strokes

Scott Crichton from Delgaty Bay, Fife, playing in his second US college golf tournament of the week, won the Mustang Intercollegiate tournament at the University of New Mexico course, Albuquerque on Tuesday.
Coming up to the end of his four-year course at Western New Mexico University, based at Silver City, Crichton finished second in a warm-up event over the same course on Sunday.
Monday and Tuesday's three-round tournament was hit by bad weather and the second round was reduced from 18 holes to nine.
Aberdour Golf Club member Crichton headed a field of 54 players with scores of 66 , 38 and 72 for a four-under-par total of 176 over the par. The opening round of six-under-par 66 - over a long course of 7,384yd was the lowest competititve score of his young career.
He won the Mustange Intercollegiate title by five shots from Ryan Gay (New Mexico University).
Steven Maxwell, from Glasgow and a junior student at Western New Mexico University, tied for 30th place on 197 with scores of 80, 40 and 77.
Western New Mexico won the team title by 24 shots in a field of nine teams.
Runner-up in last year's Scottish youths championship, Crichton aims to make his mark on the Scottish amateur circuit once he graduates in June and flies home for good.

He is meantime ranked No 716 in the R&A World Amateur Rankings.

Stuart Ballingall helps Missouri win team title

Also playing in back-to-back tournaments in quick succession, Anglo-Scot Stuart Ballingall from Norwich, a freshman student at the University of Missouri, finished joint eighth in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate tournament at Kingsmills Resort, Williamsburg in Virginia this week.

Stuart finished third in Delaware at the end of last week.

In his second outing, Stuart had rounds of 71 and 73 for a two-over-par total of 144 - five shots behind team-mate Jace Long with scores of 69 and 70 for 139. Long had two shots to spare at the head of a huge field of 120 players.

William Harrold from St Albans, like Ballingall a freshman student at Missouri, shared 35th place on 150 with scores of 73 and 77.

Ballingall's effort help Missouri win the team event by seven shots from William & Mary College in a field of 22 teams.

Gemma Hardie joint 12th at Carmel, California

Gemma Hardie from Scunthorpe, a sophomore student at Central Arkansas University, tied for 12th place in a field of 52 players at the Monterey Invitational women's college tournament at Del Monte Golf Club, Carmel, California.
Over a par-72, 6072yd course, Gemma had rounds of 80, 81 and 78 for a total of 239.
She finished 22 shots behind the winner by six strokes, Amy Anderson (North Dakota State) with scores of 73, 69 and 75 for one-over-par 217.
Lamar (930) won the team event ahead of Drake 9932) and Central Arkansas (937) in a field of nine teams.
Xavier University, Cincinnati's two English students, Kieran Lovelock from Surrey and Alan Glynn from Middlesex tied for 23rd and 35th positions respectively in a field of 102 players at the Desert Shootout college tournament at Palm Valley Golf Club, Goodyear in Arizona.
Over a par-72, 7015yd course, Kieran had scores of 71, 71 and 74 for 216.
Alan had rounds of 73, 72 and 73 for 218.
Winner by three shots was Dustin Garza (Wichita State) with rounds of 68, 65 and 69 for 14-under-par 202.
Xavier finished seventh of 17 in the team event in which Kansas and Wichita State were joint winners, both with totals of 855.

Aberdour Golf Club member Scott Crichton from Dalgety Bay, Fife, a senior year student at Western New Mexico University, finished second in the stroke-play section of the WNMU v Colorado School of Mines golf match at Albuquerque on Sunday.
Crichton, pictured right, runner-up in last year's Scottish youths championship, had a round of level par 72 over a long course of 7,384yd.
He finished a shot behind team-mate Joon Lee and a shot in front of Glasgow's Steven Maxwell in a Western New Mexico University 1-2-3 in a field of 14 players.
Western New Mexico (291) scored a resounding win over Colorado School of Mines (330) in the match.

TOM RENNIE MAKES TOP TEN AT WINSTON SALEM

Aberdeen.s Tom Rennie, a Deeside member and sophomore student at Brevard College, North Carolina, finished eighth in a field of 31 players at the WSSU Spring Challenge college golf tournament at Winston Lake Golf Club, Winston Salem, North Carolina over the weekend.
Rennie had rounds of 82 and 76 for a total of 158 - 15 shots behind the three-stroke winner, Curtis Brotherton (High Point University).
High Point (610) won the team event ahead of Brevard College (620) in a field of five squads.

HANNAH COLES JT 50th AT WILLIAMSBURG

Hannah Coles from Birmingham, a junior year student at Radford University, Virginia finished joint 50th in a field of 112 at the C&F Bank Collegiate women's tournament at Ford's Colony Country Club, Williamsburg, Virginia at the weekend.
Over a par-72, 6043yd course, Maxstoke Park Golf Club member Hannah had rounds of 82 and 84 for a total of 166, the same total as Emma Gilmore (Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia), from Moylough, Ballinaside, Ireland. Emma, a junior year student, had a pair of 83s.
Another Irish player in the field, Laura Holmes (Old Dominion), finished joint 56th on 167 with scores of 82 and 85.
Individual winner with a pair of 73s for 146 was Kameron Carter (Longwood).
William & Mary College (612) won the team title ahead of Akron (619) with Old Dominion (638) eighth and Radford (647) ninth in a field of 20 teams.

PORTEOUS JUST OUTSIDE TOP TEN AT STATESBORO

Garrick Porteous from Bamburgh Castle, a sophomore student at Tennessee University, finished tied 12th of 81 in the Schenkel Invitational men's college tournament at Forest Heights Country Club, Statesboro in Georgia.
Garrick had rounds of 78, 72 and 66 (matching the lowest score of the tournament) for a level par total of 216 over the 6947yd course.
Team-mate Darren Renwick, a sophomore student from Woking, Surrey, finished joint 64th on 226 with scores of 74, 76 and 76.
Tom Brown (Ole Miss), a freshman from Hertfordshire, finished 79th with scores of 79, 78 and 78 for a total of 235.
In a highly competitive tournament with a lot of players covered by a span of very few shots, three players shared first place on five-under-par 211: Hunter Hamrick (Alabama) (73-68-70), Jonathan Randolf (Ole Miss) 70 69 72, and Jordan Gibb (North Florida) (70-70-71).
Auburn (862) won the team title by a single stroke from North Florida. Tennessee and Ole Miss tied for fifth place on 871 in a field of 15 teams.

Sinead O'Sullivan joint third in big Arizona field

Ireland's Sinead O'Sullvan (East Tennessee State University), pictured above, tied for third place in a field of 109 players at the Northern Migration Invite women's college tournament at Poston Butte, Florence in Arizona.

Sinead, a senior-year student from Galway, had rounds of 73, 70 and 78 for a total of 221 over the par-72, 6227yd course.
Winner by three strokes with a five-under-par total of 211 was Kayla Mortellaro (Idaho) with rounds of 68, 70 and 73.

Ami Storey (Kansas State), a member at Ponteland Golf Club in the north-east of England, finished joint 21st on 228, made up of rounds of 78, 77 and 73.

East Tennessee State finished fourth of 19 teams behind winners UTSA. Kansas State came eighth.

Top 10 finishes by Jacqueline and Sammy

Scottish students in America, Jacqueline Sneddon (Grand Canyon University, Arizona) from Meigle and Sammy Vass (University of Central Florida) from Tain achieved top-10 tournament finishes this week.

Jacqueline came fifth in the Dutch Desert Classic one-round women's college event at Octotillo Golf Club, Chandler in Arizona. Team-mates Georgina Dunn and Jennifer Lutz tied for first place with 75s. Jacqueline scored an 86.

Sammy finished ninth in the individual scoreboard of the Harvard University v UCF tournament & match at Red Tail Golf Club, Sorrento in Florida. She had an 80 over a par-72, 6195yd course. Katie Sylvan (Harvard) was the winner with a 73 and Harvard won the match by 303 strokes to 314.

Harrold and Ballingall help Missouri score big team win

Missouri University won the team title at the George Washington Invite men's college tournament at Bear Trap Dunes, Bethany Beach in Delaware by a runaway margin of 32 strokes, thanks to the efforts of Chris Johnson, William Harrold and Stuart Ballingall who finished first, second and third in a field of 96 players.

Johnson is an American but Harrold comes from St Albans and Ballingall is an Anglo-Scot from Norwich. Both Harrold and Ballingall are freshmen students at Missouri.

Johnson scored 66, 68 and 65 over a par-72 course of 6834 for a tremendous 54-hole total of 17-under-par 199.

Harrold had rounds of 72, 67 and 66 for second place on 205. Ballingall was only one shot off the lead with opening rounds of 69 and 66 but a par third round of 72 saw him lose ground on both his team-mates.

O'Dell and Gamble in Webber International 1-2-3 finish

Webber University, Florida students Connor O'Dell from Taunton, Alexander Carpenhall and Tom Gamble from Walton on Thames also pulled off a 1-2-3 finish in the Webber International Tri Match over 18 holes at Lekarica Golf Club, Lake Wales in Florida.
Over a par-72, 6200yd course, freshman O'Dell had a round of 69 to win by two shots from American team-mate Carpenhall with Gamble, a sophomore, third on 73.

Two more Webber International students from England, Adam Galbraith from Haywards Heath and Craig Isabel from Stanford-Le-Hope, tied for seventh place on 78 in a field of 29 players.

Webber International (296) won the three-cornered match ahead of Franklin & Marshall (314) and Knox College (326).

Carolina and team share the title

Carley Warrington from Bradwell, England, in her final year at Belmont Abbey College, North Carolina, shared fourth place in a field of 71 at the Winthrop University Intercollegiate women's tournament at Rock Hill Country Club, Rock Hill in South Carolina earlier this week.
Carley, pictured, had scores of 76, 79 and 80 for a total of 235 over the par-72, 5,900yd course.
Team-mate Melissa Siviter, a freshman from the West Midlands and a Staffordshire county player, played disappointingly in this one after showing good form at the start of the spring college season.
She had rounds of 81, 92 and 81 for a share of 38th place.
Clear-cut individual winner was Rachel Smith (Winthrop), playing over her home course. She had rounds of 78, 77 and 73 to win by five shots with a total of 228.
Belmont Abbey College and Xavier University from Cincinnati tied for the team title on 949, three shots ahead of Winthrop in the 12-team field.

Alyssa Balding sixth at Tanglewood, Texas

Alyssa Balding, a student at Newman University, Wichita in Kansas, came sixth of 89 in the Lion Invitational women's college tournament at Tanglewood Resort, Pottsboro, Texas.
Alyssa, from Northumberland, had a pair of 79s for 158.
Teammate Megan Birdsey from Bedfordshire shared 20th place on 168 with a pair of 84s.
Winner by two shots was Joanna de Sa Peirera (University of Incarnate Word) with scores of 77 and 73 for 150.

Laura Cutler makes top 10 in Alabama

Laura Cutler, a junior student at Jacksonville University, Alabama tied for 10th place in a field of 57 players at the Samford University Intercollegiate women's tournament at Limestone Springs Golf Club, Oneonta, Alabama.
Laura, from Essex, had scores of 74, 75 and 78 for a total of 227 over the par-72, 5,880yd course.
She finished 14 shots behind the winner by five, Fanny Eineren (South Alabama) (69-70-74).
Consolation for Laura Cutler was that Jacksonville State won the team title by six shots from joint runners-up Samford and South Alabama.

Natasha Podmore joint 14th on Hawaii trip

San Francisco University senior year student Natasha Podmore from Warrington finished joint 14th of 88 in the Dr Donnis Thomnpson Invitational women's college competition at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Club, Honolulu on Hawaii.
Nice trip for Natasha as she approaches the end of her four years in America. She had rounds of 76, 77 anbd 76 for 229.
Abbey Gittings (Nova Southeastern), a freshman from Tamworth, shared 27th place on 235 with scores of 77, 77 and 81.
Team-mate Nicole Whitmore, a junior year student from Milton Keynes, came joint 46th on 239 with score sof 83, 77 and 79.
Rollins (904) won the team title by a whisker from Nova Southeastern (905) and San Francisco (906) in a field of 16 teams.

Another top 10 finish in States by Dundee's Jordan McColl

Dundee's Jordan McColl, a student at New Mexico Junior College, continued his successful freshman year on the US college golf circuit with another top 10 finish in the Harbor Lakes Invitational at Harbor Lakes Golf Club, Granbury in Texas on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
Jordan had rounds of 74 and 75 for a total of 149 over a long par-72 course of 7,177yd.
He finished joint eighth, eight shots behind the winner Nathan Anderson (McLennan Community College) who had six shots to spare over the field with rounds of 70 and 71 for three-under-par 141. So McColl, pictured right, was only two shots adrift of the runner-up on 147.
Elliot Groves from Southampton, a studen at Western Texas College, tied for 21st place on 152 with scores of 77 and 75.
Team-mate Nick Flynn from Surrey, for some reason, had a No Return in the first round and a very good second-round effort of 71 which must have left him rueing what went wrong for him in the first circuit.
Ross Milne from Aboyne, a first-year student at Dodge City Community College, tied for 90th place in a field of 118 players with scores of 83 and 81 for 164.
McColl's good effort almost landed the team title for New Mexico JC. They finished on 802, the same total as Tyler Junior College, joint second, beaten by a single shot, by winners McLennan Community College.

Tom Brown's Schooldays in the States
Tom Brown (Mississippi), a freshman student from Hertfordshire) finished seventh of 87 in the LA Tech Bulldog Classic at the Squire Creek Country Club, Choudrant in Louisiana. Tom had deteriorating rounds - it might have been the weather - of 70, 73 and 78 for 221.
Tom Robson (a freshman at Jacksonville State University, Alabama, finished joint 46th on 235 with scores of 79, 76 and 80. Tom hails from Waterlooville in Hampshire.
On the same mark was Dan Waite (Kansas) from Surrey with scores of 78, 79 and 78.
James Taverner (Southeastern Louisiana), a final year student from London, shared 61st place on 238 with scores of 82, 77 and 79.
If there was bad weather, it didn't seem to bother the winner, Cedric Scotto (Southeastern Louisiana). He had scores of 73, 68 and 71 for four-under-par 212 to win by four strokes.
There was a double whammy for Southeastern Louisiana. They pipped Mississippi by a single shot at the head of a field of 16 teams.

Top college player sent off course

There is not a lot of Monday morning armchair quarterbacking going on when it comes to college golf. The decisions by a golf coach are usually made prior to an event and geared toward preparation, with very little Xs and Os. Therefore, you don’t have discussions about a bad play–call, poor use of a timeout or players who should have stayed in the game.
However, this past weekend at the Tiger Wave Classic, played at English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans, there is some discussion about a player being pulled out of the game.
Auburn defeated 22 other teams to win the inaugural event, but it was an incident (a sending off the course) that took place in the second round that is stealing the attention.
One of the top players in the field, Purdue’s Quebec-born Maude-Aimee LeBlanc, pictured above – ranked No. 6 by Golfweek– was sent off the course by her own coach for unsportsmanlike conduct. After 11 holes, Purdue coach Devon Brouse told LeBlanc, 21 on February 14, she was done and to walk back to the clubhouse. She was 11–over- par at the time.
“This is about disrespecting the course, fellow competitors, her team, her school and the game,” said Brouse, who has been coaching college golf for more than 30 years. “This is not her first time.”
LeBlanc had been penalised in the past for conduct issues.

LeBlanc opened with an 8–over 80 and then, after her No Return in the second round, came back in the final round to shoot 73. According to Brouse, the Canadian apologised to everyone and played in the final round, which he felt was big for her to do.
“She is aware of our team rules and is working on overcoming her struggles in this area. I do think she is a good person and wants to do the right thing. Her actions have hurt our team score,” said Brouse.
The Boilermakers entered the event ranked No. 4, but turned in their worst showing of the season with a 14th –place finish.
There is no question LeBlanc is one of the best female players in college golf. She has been a Golfweek All–American in her first two seasons at Purdue, and was ranked 28th as a freshman and 19th as a sophomore. She won twice in the fall season.
This was not about protecting a player’s ranking, which some suggest. This was about coaching and teaching. LeBlanc is not alone when it comes to this sort of conduct. I would bet there are numerous coaches out there that have entertained the thought of doing this in the past and probably would have helped the player become a better player and the team become a better team.
“Let’s hope she can grow and learn the lessons that all young players have to learn in their careers,” said Brouse.
I have a feeling she will.

Seamus Power from Waterford scores

fourth win of US college career

Seamus Power from Waterford, a senior (fourth) year student at East Tennessee State University, scored the fourth tournament win of his US college golf career in the General Hackler Championship at TPC of Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet in South Carolina.
Over a par-72 course of 6950yd, Power, who has won as a freshman, sophomore, junior and now senior student, had rounds of 69, 71 and 75 for a total of one-under-par 215, sharing medallist honours with Josh Anderson (Pepperdine). There was no play-off.
Power's great effort also helped East Tennessee State win a team title for the second time this season.
“It’s always nice to win,” Power, pictured, said later. “My game feels good right now and I was driving it well the last couple days which helps on a course like this one. The pressure of having everyone chase you is definitely different, but it was fun.
“As a team, winning on course like this one that’s a good test of golf is nice. We’ve done well so far this spring, but our goal is to prepare and be ready for regional and nationals later this spring. But right now things are looking pretty good.”
The Bucs are now 2-0 on the season playing at TPC courses, as their earlier win in the JU Invitational came at TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville. ETSU's two wins since the Christmas break are the most in a spring season since the 2001 team won three events.
Seamus Power's team-mates Rhys Enoch from Cornwall, Michael Stewart from Ayrshire and Paul O'Kane from Castledawson, Northern Ireland, finished join seventh, joint 20th and joint 22nd respectively in a field of 72 players.
Enoch had rounds of 73, 71 and 75 for 219. Stewart scored 76, 77 and 73 for 226, while O'Kane had rounds of 80, 74 and 73 for 227.
East Tennessee State (883) won the team title ahead of Coastal Carolina (886) and Augusta State (892) in a field of 12 teams.

Anna Carling battles through

wind and rain to be jt fifth

Welsh international Anna Carling came up through the field on a final day of atrocious weather to finish joint fifth in a field of 90 players at the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate 54-hole women's tournament at Victoria Country Club in the city of Victoria, Texas.

Anna, pictured right, from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan club, is a freshman student at Arkansas State University. A past Glamorgan ladies county champion, Anna had rounds of 76, 78 and 75 for a total of 229 over the par-72 course of 6,028yd - and it was playing very long on that final day of wind and rain.

Grimsby's Jessica Schiele (Redlands Community College) had looked like she would certainly finish in the top 10 after scoring 76 in both her first two rounds. But she did not cope with the deterioration in the weather as well as Anna Carling did.

A final round of 81 for a total of 233 dropped Jessica down to joint 11th in the final standings - but still a very good effort from the Grimsby girl who has done well in her freshman season on the US women's college circuit.

Royal Liverpool GC member Laura Jones, a student at Oklahoma City University, had scores of 76, 84 and 80 for a share of 28th place on 240.

Kelly MacPhail (Redlands) from Manchester finished joint 53rd on 246 with scores of 81, 81 and 84.

Winner by three shots was Kristen Hill (Akron University) with a great final round of 72 to propel her up through the field to victory with a seven over par total of 223. Her earlier rounds were 74 and 77.

Texas State (913) won the team event ahead of Oklahoma (916) and Sam Houston State (938).

Arkansas State (951) came fifth.
